DFA Records: The Early Years
A photobook by Tim Soter
Graphically, the process of this book was very challenging: we wanted to keep it looking like a “fan book,” it had to preserve that DIY visual quality, so we kept telling ourselves to purposefully let some things go or let them look a certain way to convey that. The book was co-designed with the photographer, following some of his sketches, so there was a lot of negotiation in the layout.
The images came from different sources, with different lighting (indoors, at night, artificial lights, etc.), so we had to be very intentional with the prepress. This is very important, especially when working with photos sourced from negatives. The font we chose was GT Pressura by Grilli Type because we wanted a “warmer” monospaced font that would feel coherent with the intimacy of the book, but also suggest a certain time, especially with the “facsimiles” of emails the photographer wanted to include

Data for the charts in this book came from different sources. We had help from our friend C. Isaac Rockliff in setting up some of the styles to fit spacing as well as possible while still keeping that “magazine” feeling.
As photographer Tim Soter says in his preface, “This book is for the fans. It’s for the gearheads, the photo nerds, the party people, the music plus ones, and the plus nones. It’s for the artists themselves, who can expect to see a few photos they haven’t seen before. This book is for those who got turned on to DFA after the fact, and of course, it’s for the ones who were there.
