Karmele Leizaola
newspapers

Leizaola was the first woman to be documented working as a graphic designer in Venezuela.

Each publication represents, in its size and design, a stage of Leizaola’s life and career, using graphic elements from her work: flat backgrounds of the same color palettes, silhouetted images, and typographical contrast. The first cover shows her as a child, the second shows her at Tipografía Vargas upon her arrival in Venezuela, and the third shows her later in her career, working in newspapers.

One of the highlights of the publication is a timeline recounting Leizaola’s career through the printed publications she worked on and testimonial interviews from family and colleagues.

Three different styles were developed to show context, personal experience, and relevant work. Fonts used were Graphika by Commercial Type, which allowed for different typographical hierarchies, and Tethys, a custom font by Mirko Velimirović, inspired by the work of Wim Crouwel.
Exhibit at ChaShaMa, alongside Sheryl Oppenheim.
