The cover of this publication recreates the sequence of steps required to open the 1967 publication Transverbales 1 by Alfredo Silva Estrada, and goes hand in hand with the movements and kinetic approaches to the author’s work in several aspects of his career. We decided to go in this direction, although cross-institutionally the cover was later changed to an image of Carlos Cruz Diez's hands to reference his manual labor in this period of his career. A fragment of the origins of graphic design in Venezuela.

The Weight of Form: The Graphic Design of Carlos Cruz-Diez

This is a limited-edition bilingual catalog, made for an exhibition of graphic work by Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923–2019) at the Reina Sofía Museum and Sala Mendoza, curated by Ariel Jimenez. We worked closely in collaboration with Atelier Cruz-Diez, Fundación Cruz-Diez, and Archivo de Fotografía Urbana. Digitally printed for distribution in Venezuela and institutions in the United States.

The catalog documents work exhibited in Spain and Venezuela and was distributed internationally.

Accolades: The catalog documented the work displayed in Spain and Venezuela and was distributed internationally.

The font, used for a somewhat modernist look and feel, was the sans serif Archivo by Omnibus Type. The publication was printed digitally in the UK and saddle-bound. One of the hardest parts of this project was not the design, but the selection of printed matter to include and the editing process across institutions, in multiple languages. We believe that projects like this contribute to history-making within our field.
